This is one of the reasons I became a candidate for the Dane County Board of Supervisors. This house sits in Dane County District 7. It is not an investment property. It is not going to be flipped for sale in sixteen months for a huge percentage profit. It is not going to be bulldozed for an apartment complex because the lot is worth more than the house.

This is a home.

Built in 1951 by Armin and Margaret Meyer when Armin came back from the Big War in the South Pacific, this is where Armin and Margaret raised their children back when major boulevards in the area were dirt roads and Sequoya Library was a cow pasture. Children pulled little red wagons through the neighborhood selling produce from family gardens, their only fear being late for supper.

This is a home.

Now that the current tax statements are out in District 7 and the City of Madison, phone calls come almost daily from scouts and phone bank operators asking if the property is for sale. Those advance agents know the pressure is on many homeowners in Madison and Dane County to divest themselves of what it took so many decades to achieve. Now that the mortgages are burned, the taxes are burning up the deeds.

This is a home.

What makes it a home is the fact the man who built it passed away within its walls on the very day of his Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary and that very day after the funeral director had come and gone, Armin’s widow straightened her clothes, combed her hair, wiped her eyes and walked up the street to the church they had attended because she had an appointment that afternoon to have her picture taken for the church directory, a picture that might have included her husband of sixty years.

Those are the kind of people who built the home you see here in District 7 of Dane County and a lot of other homes you don’t see and those are a few of the reasons I want to serve on the Dane County Board of Supervisors, to be sure the money required for government is well spent and the reasons it is being spent are worthy of the people who built the house you see here we call The Pink.
