I put the door hanger with my information in place and a man across the street going to his car asked loud enough for me to hear:

“Lost cat?”

I walked toward him and said, “Political candidate.”

I handed him my information.

He looked at it.

“You’re the guy running for county board?”

“That’s me.”

“They say you’re a smart loser,” he said.

The answer came to me.

“Sir,” I said, “I’d rather be a smart loser than a stupid winner.”

He smiled.

He nodded.

He got in his car and drove away.

I kept walking down that street and up several others and up to every door.
