A man called me on my Campaign Phone Number yesterday.

He left a message.

My Campaign Phone Number is 608-628-1313.

That’s the one he called me on.

I’ll try to do him justice.

He said, “Hi. I got a flyer on my door this afternoon from someone who says he’s going to pay over $15,000 in property taxes this year for two houses here in Madison. I want you to know I wish I could pay more property taxes. We’ve got such a housing problem here in Madison I just think its wrong for anyone to squat on two houses when there are so many people looking for a place to live.”

Allow me to take this opportunity and this means to thank the caller for his message, remind him I’m running for a county not city office and leave this message of my own.

I do so in all seriousness.

Sir, I suggest you contact either the Madison City Treasurer or the Dane County Treasurer or better yet contact them both at your earliest convenience and volunteer to make a donation to the fullest extent of your generosity or beyond equal to or in excess of any property taxes you may otherwise owe.

Stipulate as you do your donation must be used entirely for housing. No administrative fees, no utilization for publicity, no departmental materials or development, commissions or miscellaneous expenses are to be deducted. The entire sum of your generosity, I am bold to suggest, must be used in response to urgent and current housing needs.

Aside, as such a newsworthy donation might be tax deductible.

Get a receipt.
